How to Increase My Domain Authority

You have heard of domain authority, and you know it is vital for your website. But, if you are still unsure what precisely domain authority is and how it can boost your business, there’s more you should know. Luckily, this article will give you a clear breakdown of domain authority meaning and a roadmap to increase your domain authority score.

What Is Domain Authority?

Domain authority (DA) is a ranking score for search engines that predicts your website’s likelihood of ranking on search engine result pages (SERPs). The score ranges from 1 to 100, with higher scores signifying a greater ranking ability. You can calculate domain authority by evaluating the total number of links and linking root domains into one domain authority score.

Why Domain Authority Is Important

Although the domain authority predicts your website’s success, it does not represent success. This is because Google does not use the DA metric and so, increasing domain authority is not an automatic guarantee for your website to rank higher in Google search results. Instead, your website’s domain authority score helps you determine how competitive your niche is, allowing you to choose keywords strategically.

For instance, if your website’s DA score is 55 and your competitors for that keyword have domain authority between 38 and 46, you know that one well-crafted web page or blog post has a good chance of ranking. But if your competitors’ domain authority ranking is in the 80s, you will need to try targeting a different keyword. You can use the word domain authority interchangeably with site authority, which means your site’s specific reputation score.

How to Check Your Site’s Domain Authority

Checking your website’s domain authority is not as complicated as it sounds. It is a simple 3-step process:

  • Open your browser and go to your domain authority checker of choice page.
  • Enter your website’s URL in the search bar.
  • Analyze the data the domain authority checker provides.

Many SEO tools have their own versions of domain metrics which you can use instead. For example, Ahrefs has Website Authority Checker, and Majestic has Site Explorer. With the domain authority checker data, you can discover your domain authority score, but you’ll still be unsure whether it is good.

So, What Is a Good Domain Authority Score?

Asking whether your domain authority score is good is a fair but wrong question. Instead, it would be best if you asked whether the DA score is suitable for your site. With a DA score of 1 to 100, every website begins at one and then climbs steadily as it gains popularity and backlinks. Thus, what determines whether your DA score is good for your site is the DA score of your competitors.

From the previous example, your DA score of 55 is excellent if your direct competitor’s DA score ranges between 38 to 46 but is lacking if the competitor’s rank is in the 80s. Simply put, if your domain authority score is higher than your competitors, you are doing fine, but if it is lower, you need to put in more work.

How to Boost Domain Authority

Here is a three-step process to improve your domain authority.

Work on the Basics

First, ensure you set up your website correctly, meaning you need to optimize on-page content, build a mobile-friendly website, and ensure your site loads faster. To get you started in the right direction, consider these tips:

  • Mind your internal links because they help search engines crawl and index your content. Make sure your anchor text and the page you are linking to match.
  • Test your website on the phone to ensure it is mobile-friendly. Mobile optimized sites provide better user experiences and increase your content’s chances of securing high-quality backlinks.
  • Use PageSpeed Insights to make sure your website loads quickly. A slower site receives higher bounce rates, which are red flags for search engines.

Build High-Quality Backlinks

High-quality backlinks are king in your site’s domain authority. The more the backlinks, the higher your score. Here are a few ways to secure high-quality backlinks and build domain authority.

  • Create killer content: Authoritative websites only link to great content. Take your time to craft engaging, in-depth content of higher value than what is on the internet already.
  • Promote your content: Even great content requires promoting. You can promote it to your social media followers and email list to make it visible and boost the chances of securing backlinks.
  • Find and implement a link-building strategy: Stellar content and a regular promotional strategy will get the work done. But you’ll need a more proactive link-building approach in the long run. For example, consider reaching out to authoritative sites and asking them to link to your content.
  • Begin guest blogging: Guest blogging for authoritative sites is a great way to build backlinks. You can link to your website in the guest post, and the readers who love the guest post will check your website for similar content and may even link to some of your posts.

Eliminate Low-Quality Backlinks

To raise your blog’s domain authority score, you need to build high-quality links and reduce low-quality ones.

A high-quality link comes from a reputable site whose publisher is respected and considered an expert, while low-quality links come from spammy websites that are not even known. To reduce such links, use a tool like SEMrush to help you identify the backlinks harming your SEO domain authority score. Then, make a list and manually remove them where possible, or disavow the links through Google.

Build Your Domain Authority Score

Domain authority is a vital marketing metric that helps you build a solid SEO strategy to push your business forward. The three steps above are how to build a domain authority that allows your website to rank highly.
