Why Your Business Needs a Brand Style Guide in 2020

WHAT IS A BRAND STYLE GUIDE?

A Brand Style Guide (also called a Brand Book) is essentially a set of instructions for your company’s branding. A brand style guide defines what your business is, what it believes in, why it exists, how to communicate with clients, etc. It also includes basic instructions for how to use a brand in terms of visuals and style, such as logo design, typography, colors, photography styles, display ads, email signatures, etc. A brand style guide can be used to capture your existing branding, improve it, or create it from scratch. But ultimately, it’s important for any brand to have and use.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Not only is it important to build a corporate brand for your business, it’s important to document how this brand should be employed so that the original vision never changes. Think of your brand as a building and a brand style guide as a blueprint to build it correctly. If construction workers didn’t religiously work from blueprints when constructing a building, the end result may be close, but the final product will deviate greatly from the initial design. The smallest deviation from the plan can change how your brand is perceived by the outside world. Errors can accumulate quickly and eventually your vision is a thing of the past.

A corporate brand can be so powerful to your business if done correctly. The brand that your business employs is how the world (i.e. competitors, business partners, potential and existing customers, etc.) recognizes your business from the outside looking in. It is so important to build a brand that is trustworthy and professional to the public eye.

BUILDING A BRAND STYLE GUIDE

In order to build a successful brand, the most important thing about building a strong brand is consistency. From logo use and design, colors, fonts, tone and grammar styles, website landing pages, print ads, display ads, etc. everything must remain consistent. Having a brand style guide or brand book readily available  and in the hands of all employees that work in your marketing department provides the consistency necessary to build and maintain a successful brand.
